Armed Guards Repel Suspected Attack Near Yemen's Socotra Island

(MENAFN) A products tanker deployed its armed security detail Friday to repel a suspicious small vessel that closed within 100 meters of the ship near the Yemeni island of Socotra, the UK's maritime safety authority disclosed Saturday.

The incident unfolded roughly 200 nautical miles west of Socotra, when the craft — carrying five individuals — altered course and retreated after the tanker's defense team was deployed.

"The Master of a products tanker has reported that the vessel was approached by a small craft with 5 persons onboard, closest point of approach 100m.

"The vessel's Armed Security Team were deployed and the small craft altered course away from the reporting vessel," the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Center said on the US social media company X.

No further details were immediately available.

The encounter followed a separate maritime incident disclosed Friday, in which the UKMTO confirmed a tanker had been targeted in another episode 98 nautical miles north of Socotra.
