US Sees Dim Prospects for Russia-Ukraine Peace as Sides Resist Compromise
“As of right now, the prospects don't look great, and that either side is prepared to make the concessions necessary in order to reach an agreement,” Rubio told the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
He voiced particular frustration over Russia’s reluctance to adjust its position in order to move toward a settlement.
Rubio stressed that the conflict cannot be resolved through military means and instead requires a diplomatic solution, while also acknowledging that the United States cannot be considered an “impartial mediator” as it continues to supply weapons to Ukraine.
He added that US support for Kyiv has remained “unimpeded” despite the ongoing war in the Middle East.
“I don't have any news for you on that front today, but ... we're ready to step in and play whatever positive role we can to bring that devastating and escalating war to an end," said Rubio.
