Journalist Wins Unfair Termination Case Against ABC
The Federal Court determined that ABC violated the Fair Work Act by dismissing her for reasons "including that she held a political opinion opposing the Israeli military campaign in Gaza," as reported by ABC News.
Lattouf, who is of Lebanese-Australian descent, had been hired by ABC for a short-term, five-day engagement in December 2023. However, just three days into her role, she was let go after sharing an Instagram post from Human Rights Watch (HRW) about the Gaza conflict.
The post carried the caption "HRW reporting starvation as a tool of war," which ABC deemed a violation of its editorial standards.
HRW had published a report documenting how Israeli authorities allegedly used starvation as a tactic of warfare in Gaza.
Lattouf filed a lawsuit for wrongful termination, asserting that her dismissal was linked to her political views, ethnicity, and the influence of pro-Israel groups.
The Israeli military has been conducting an aggressive offensive in Gaza since October 2023, resulting in the deaths of over 56,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom were women and children.
