China Blames U.S. for Sparking Iranian Nuclear Crisis
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, criticized certain Security Council members for focusing solely on Iran’s alleged breaches of non-proliferation commitments, seemingly to justify military actions by Israel and the US.
"Here, China wishes to remind those countries of the following basic facts: it is none other than the United States that started the Iranian nuclear crisis," Fu declared.
He recalled that the US unilaterally exited the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, subsequently reimposing and intensifying sanctions on Iran under a policy of "maximum pressure." This strategy blocked Iran from benefiting economically from the agreement and compelled Tehran to reduce its obligations under the deal.
Fu further highlighted that the US—damaging its own credibility—carried out military strikes against Iranian nuclear sites, derailing the negotiation process it had initially championed.
These actions have pushed the Iranian nuclear issue into a deadlock and sharply heightened regional tensions.
The Chinese ambassador emphasized the importance of acknowledging Iran’s genuine efforts to resolve the crisis.
As of today, Iran continues to comply with its nuclear non-proliferation commitments and implement the comprehensive safeguards agreement. Iran has consistently affirmed that it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons, Fu noted.
He also pointed out Tehran’s ongoing constructive and professional negotiations with the US, underscoring that Iran has never abandoned its diplomatic initiatives. However, Fu criticized some countries for selectively using the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general’s report to push a resolution at the IAEA Board of Governors without sufficient consultation. This move, he warned, has damaged the dialogue atmosphere and fueled tension.
"Those countries should reflect hard on the adverse consequences of their irresponsible move," Fu concluded.
