Trump wants Russia-Ukraine war to end
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday morning while heading to the NATO Summit in The Hague, Trump was asked about a potential final summit statement that could criticize Moscow. He responded, “I’ll have to take a look at it. But, you know, I’d like to see a deal with Russia.”
Trump also mentioned a recent conversation he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the call, Putin offered to help mediate with Iran, though Trump said he didn’t need assistance on that issue. He stressed instead that his main priority was to negotiate an agreement with Russia to resolve the Ukraine crisis.
Since returning to the presidency in January, Trump has made efforts to repair relations with Moscow, which had deteriorated under the previous administration. Russian officials have welcomed this approach and indicated openness to restoring diplomatic ties.
Trump’s initiatives have revived direct dialogue between Russia and Ukraine—talks that had previously stalled in 2022, reportedly due to pressure from Western allies. The negotiations resumed in Türkiye last month, marking a significant step forward.
As a result of renewed discussions, Russia and Ukraine have engaged in several prisoner swaps, following an agreement reached during the second round of talks on June 2. These humanitarian exchanges have also involved the return of soldiers’ remains, with Russia reportedly handing over the bodies of more than 6,000 Ukrainian troops and receiving 59 in return.
Additionally, both sides have exchanged initial drafts of documents outlining their proposals for a future peace roadmap, signaling cautious progress toward a potential resolution of the conflict.
