NATO chief praises Trump for attacks on Iran through private message

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has released screenshots of a private message from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in which the alliance’s leader commended Trump for his bold actions in Iran and predicted a historic win for him at the NATO summit.

The message, shared by Trump on his Truth Social platform, was reportedly sent just before the start of the two-day NATO meeting in The Hague on Tuesday.

“Congratulations and thank you for your decisive action in Iran, that was truly extraordinary, and something no one else dared to do. It makes us all safer,” Rutte wrote, in what appears to be a reference to the U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities carried out on June 22.

Rutte also indicated that Trump was on the verge of another major achievement, noting that all NATO members had agreed to increase their defense budgets to 5% of GDP. “You will achieve something NO American president in decades could get done,” the message read.

A NATO spokesperson later confirmed to a news agency that the message was real.

Trump has repeatedly pushed European NATO members to contribute more to the alliance’s defense spending. In recent years, several countries have pledged to boost their military budgets, often citing the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine as a reason.

Despite the agreement, not all NATO countries are on board with the new spending target. Spain has reportedly declined to adopt the 5% goal, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez calling it “not only unreasonable but also counterproductive.” Spain currently allocates just 1.3% of its GDP to defense, falling short of even the previously agreed 2% benchmark.

Rutte, however, dismissed the idea of opt-outs, telling reporters on Monday that NATO’s rules do not allow for such exceptions.
