Paramilitary RSF commander gets assigned as head of parallel government in Sudan

(MENAFN) Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), was sworn in on Sunday as the head of a rival government in the country.

The Sudanese Founding Alliance, a coalition led by the RSF, confirmed that Dagalo took the oath in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State in western Sudan. Abdelaziz Adam al-Hilu was appointed as his deputy, alongside members of a 13-seat presidential council.

The coalition had announced the formation of this parallel government on July 26. Earlier, in February, the RSF and allied groups signed a political charter in Kenya to establish the rival administration, a move strongly condemned by Khartoum.

On August 14, the UN Security Council rejected the creation of a parallel authority in RSF-controlled areas, citing violations of Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

Since April 2023, clashes between the Sudanese army and RSF have killed over 20,000 people and displaced 14 million, according to UN and local sources. However, research from U.S. universities suggests the death toll may be as high as 130,000.
