Latvia Records Surge in COVID-19 Cases

(MENAFN) COVID-19 infections are surging across Latvia, with cases accelerating at an alarming pace. According to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), the country recorded five fatalities linked to the virus last week.

The CDC’s latest data reveals a concerning uptick in positive test rates, which climbed to 18.9% last week. This marks a significant increase from 17.3% two weeks ago and 12.3% three weeks ago.

Hospitals reported 45 new COVID-19 admissions during the past week. Of the 81 patients currently hospitalized with the virus, 26 individuals, or 32.1%, were primarily admitted for COVID-19-related issues, the CDC stated.

In total, five COVID-19 patients died last week, with health officials noting that this mirrors the same epidemiological trends seen during the same period last year.

Wastewater analysis also pointed to a rise in SARS-CoV-2 activity, confirming that the Omicron KP.3 subvariant is now the dominant strain circulating.

In response to the growing outbreak, the CDC announced that the updated COVID-19 vaccines, Comirnaty LP.8.1, which are specifically adapted to target the circulating variants, are now available for distribution across Latvia.
