Syrian leader wants to strengthen bilateral relations with Egypt, Iraq
Addressing a group of Damascus residents on Sunday during Liberation Day—the first anniversary of Bashar al-Assad’s removal—Sharaa laid out the pillars of Syria’s revamped diplomatic strategy. He said the country is now focused on cultivating a broad regional and global equilibrium.
“Syria has created a type of balance in its relations that was impossible to achieve over the past hundred years,” he said. “Today, the entire world is not looking toward Damascus in vain.”
Sharaa described ties with major powers such as the US, Russia and China as “good,” adding, “Everyone is satisfied, and things are going well,” while also characterizing relations with France, the UK, Germany and Spain as constructive.
Regionally, he said Syria’s engagement with Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE has reached an “ideal” state. However, he noted that connections with Egypt and Iraq remain “acceptable,” and he voiced optimism that these links will develop “to a greater and higher level.”
The Syrian leader argued that this diplomatic balance has positioned the country as an “influential actor” both in the region and on the world stage, asserting that Damascus now stands as an example of stability and enduring peace.
“We aim for Syria to embody this spirit and this revival,” he said.
He also emphasized the importance of recognizing the significance of the current political moment, stating, “The most important investment is investing in this historic turning point,” and cautioned against letting it slip away. “We’re not prepared to pay such a price every ten years.”
On Monday morning, mosques across the country held coordinated “victory chants” to commemorate the anniversary of Assad’s fall, following an announcement from the Ministry of Religious Endowments.
