Iran Moves Nuclear Talks with US to Oman

(MENAFN) High-stakes nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran, initially set for Turkey, will now convene in Oman, Axios reported Wednesday.

"The nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran are expected to take place in Oman on Friday," Axios correspondent Barak Ravid said through US social media company X, citing an Arab source.

The Gulf nation emerged as the new venue after Iran requested the location switch from Istanbul, where diplomats had originally planned to meet, Axios first disclosed. Ravid subsequently confirmed through his post that Washington agreed to Tehran's terms.

"Negotiations are still ongoing about whether Arab and Muslim countries from the region will join the talks in Oman," he added.

The White House, Ankara, Muscat, and Tehran have not immediately confirmed the report.

Multiple outlets reported earlier this week that US special envoy Steve Witkoff had scheduled a Friday meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Istanbul to address Iran's nuclear program.

However, Axios revealed Tuesday that Tehran demanded modifications to both the location and format of the discussions.

Earlier reports indicated that delegations from Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar were expected to participate in the diplomatic gathering. Yet Axios disclosed that Iran, beyond requesting the venue change, was also pressing for direct bilateral talks rather than a multilateral format.
