PM Receives Warning of Reputational Risk from Mandelson’s Epstein Ties
Released government documents indicate that advisers highlighted the relationship continued even after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for procuring an underage girl, as stated by reports.
The PM’s chief secretary, Darren Jones, acknowledged that the due diligence process “fell short” and noted the government had already taken steps to address “weaknesses in the system.”
The files also suggest that Mandelson considered seeking a severance payment exceeding £500,000 (approximately $610,000) after his dismissal, although reports indicate he disputes this claim. The Treasury ultimately approved a payout of £75,000 (around $92,000).
According to reports, Lord Mandelson maintains that he promptly agreed to the sum provided by the Foreign Office and made it clear he had no plans to pursue an employment tribunal, adding that if any allegations of dishonesty had arisen, he would not have been entitled to any payment.
Lord Mandelson was removed from his post as the UK’s ambassador to the US last September following new revelations regarding the extent of his friendship with Epstein.
The newly released files, spanning 147 pages, represent the first portion of documents related to his appointment. Additional records are expected to be published in the future, though some have been withheld at the request of the Metropolitan Police to avoid prejudicing an ongoing criminal investigation involving Lord Mandelson.
