Israel Bombs Beirut Suburbs in Brazen Ceasefire Violation

(MENAFN) Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Sunday, striking the Lebanese capital in open defiance of a ceasefire agreement that remains nominally in force.

The bombardment of Dahiyeh was conducted without any prior warning, a reporter on the ground confirmed, with two successive explosions rocking the area and plumes of smoke rising from the stricken sites.

The Israeli army issued a statement claiming the strikes had hit infrastructure belonging to Lebanese militant group Hezbollah within the targeted district.

Sunday's assault came just hours after Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich had publicly demanded airstrikes on Dahiyeh in response to two Hezbollah drone attacks on northern Israel — inflammatory calls that appeared to directly precede the military action, despite the ceasefire that has been in place since April 17.

The strikes form part of a relentless Israeli bombing campaign against Lebanon that has continued unabated since March 2, during which Israeli forces have also moved to occupy several towns in the country's south.

The cumulative human cost of the Israeli military offensive has been staggering. According to Lebanese officials, the campaign has claimed the lives of more than 3,700 people, left nearly 11,500 wounded, and driven over 1.5 million residents from their homes since March 2.
